The leadership of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG), led by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, paid a formal courtesy call on the newly appointed Tema Sector Commander of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Assistant Commissioner Michael Nelson, at the Long Room of the Tema Port.
The visit formed part of the Association’s commitment to strengthening collaboration and institutional engagement with key stakeholders within Ghana’s trade and port ecosystem, while officially congratulating Assistant Commissioner Nelson on his appointment and assumption of office.
Strengthening Collaboration Between Customs and the Trading Community
During the engagement, Executive Secretary of IEAG, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, assured the new Tema Sector Commander of the Association’s full cooperation and continuous support in helping to improve operational efficiency and trade facilitation at Ghana’s premier port.
Mr. Awingobit emphasized that strong collaboration between Customs authorities and trade stakeholders remains essential in addressing operational bottlenecks, improving cargo clearance systems, enhancing compliance, and creating a more business-friendly environment for importers and exporters.
“The relationship between Customs and the trading community is extremely important to the growth of Ghana’s economy. As stakeholders within the import and export sector, we believe continuous dialogue and cooperation are necessary to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and promote smooth business operations at our ports,” Mr. Awingobit stated.
He further reiterated IEAG’s commitment to supporting policies and operational reforms that will position Ghana’s ports as competitive and efficient trade gateways within the West African sub-region.
Tema Customs Commander Commends IEAG
Assistant Commissioner Michael Nelson, in his response, expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana for what he described as a thoughtful and timely visit.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority to improving operational efficiency at the ports while supporting the broader vision of the government under President John Dramani Mahama to position Ghana’s ports as preferred destination hubs within the sub-region.
According to him, collaboration between Customs and trade associations is critical to achieving sustainable improvements within the shipping and logistics sector.
“The role played by trade stakeholders such as the IEAG is very important in ensuring effective engagement between Customs and the business community. We appreciate the continuous support and understanding demonstrated by the Association over the years,” Assistant Commissioner Nelson noted.
Recognition of IEAG’s Support During Policy Transitions
The Tema Sector Commander also commended the Association for its cooperation and support during key operational transitions at the ports, particularly during the implementation phase of the Publican AI policy, which he acknowledged came with several operational and adjustment challenges.
According to Assistant Commissioner Nelson, the understanding and constructive engagement shown by IEAG and its members contributed significantly to maintaining smooth interactions between Customs officials and stakeholders within the trading community during the period.

The engagement highlighted the importance of continuous stakeholder collaboration in promoting:
