IEAGHANA Commends Historic Appointment of Women to Ghana Maritime Authority Board

Accra, Ghana – July 2025

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAGHANA) has warmly welcomed the recent appointment of women to the governing board of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), describing it as a progressive and commendable step toward gender equity in Ghana’s maritime and logistics sector.

In a statement released through the Executive Secretary of the Association, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, IEAGHANA lauded the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for demonstrating a practical commitment to female inclusion in high-level decision-making bodies, especially in critical trade-aligned institutions such as the GMA.

“We view this appointment not only as a milestone for women but also as a signal of the government’s readiness to diversify and strengthen maritime governance. It is a proud moment for Ghanaian trade,” said Mr. Awingobit.

Strengthening Maritime Oversight Through Diversity

The Ghana Maritime Authority plays a pivotal role in regulating and promoting safe, secure, and efficient maritime transport services in Ghana. The inclusion of more women on its board reflects a broader understanding of the need for diverse perspectives in policy formulation and strategic oversight.

IEAGHANA strongly believes that gender-balanced leadership enriches the quality of governance, brings fresh insights to trade and port reforms, and encourages more women to take on leadership roles in shipping, logistics, and supply chain management.

“As an Association that works closely with maritime stakeholders, we are confident that this move will foster more inclusive and sustainable maritime strategies for the benefit of both importers and exporters,” the statement added.

Looking Ahead

IEAGHANA has pledged its continuous support to the Ghana Maritime Authority in fulfilling its national mandate. The Association is particularly optimistic that the newly reconstituted board, with its diverse composition, will prioritize initiatives that reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, promote port digitization, and ensure cost-efficiency at Ghana’s maritime entry points.

The Association calls on other regulatory agencies to take a cue from this example and embrace inclusive leadership as a cornerstone for policy excellence.
